Human beings are working on themselves constantly, always looking for improvement. We typically improve ourselves by expanding on either our physical, mental, or emotional needs.
We work on our physical needs by doing things like exercising, eating well, and getting adequate sleep. We work on our mental well-being by doing things such as reading, writing, and constantly learning new things. And finally, we work on our emotional well-being by managing our stress levels and keeping a positive, healthy outlook on life.
But what we very often tend to neglect, and this is usually due to a lack of awareness, is to work on our spiritual side.
Spirituality is about surrendering yourself and acknowledging the fact that there is something bigger than you out there, something beyond your control. It allows us to search for a meaning in life. It could refer to a God, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be. It is not a black and white concept, and as people go through life, they may find that their definition of spirituality changes. This will all depend on factors such as a person’s own experiences, the relationships they currently have, and whatever personal beliefs they may have.
For a lot of people, their spirituality is connected to their identity and can help them answer questions such as whether or not they’re a good person, is there meaning behind any of their self-perceived suffering, what their connection is to the world around them, if everything happens for a reason, and how they can go about living their life in the best way possible.
While religion and spirituality share many of the same aspects, it’s important to note that they aren’t necessarily one in the same. The two certainly aren’t completely distinct from one another, and there is an overlap between many of the fundamental principles shared between the two.
Religion VS. Spirituality
Religion has more of an organized, group following, and adheres to a certain set of rules and codes. Everybody that belongs to said religion more or less agrees that the set rules placed upon that religion and lives their life according to those rules.
With spirituality, the questions are more personal and what would could be considered ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ to one person according to their spirituality could be completely different to another person, as everyone has their own unqiue way of discovering meaning, connection, and value based on their own experiences.
It is generally accepted that our spirit lives on after we die and our physical presence has left earth. Because it isn’t a physical organ, spiritual life is considered eternal and lives on in connection with the universe, and whatever that spirit reaches to for a higher power. It is because of this that once a person acknowledges and fully becomes in tune with their spirituality, they must accept the fact that there is an infinite force in the world that is beyond their power and control, and that life doesn’t necessarily end once they are buried and gone.
